The Investment

When I first purchased a Mercedes W113 Pagoda SL, the huge price variation puzzled me. Yes, there are the three main models—230SL, 250SL, and 280SL—differentiated by engine size, but even within those, listings on eBay and auction sites range from entry-level around £50,000 up to £250,000 or more.

After following these cars through auctions and global sales platforms for years, the reason for the spread became clear: condition, history, and the quality (or absence) of restoration drive everything.

With nearly 20 years of owning classic Mercedes under my belt, I finally decided to buy one. I did thorough due diligence and chose what appeared to be a solid entry-level 230SL from South Carolina: Signal Red with black interior, plenty of service history, and a seemingly legitimate owner. The price was £34,000 plus import costs—a bargain, or so I thought. We arranged to ship it to the UK for enjoyment cruising around Cornwall.

She arrived, and rather than risk driving her straight from Felixstowe port, we trailered her home for convenience. We filled the tank, connected the battery, and after some initial rattles and smoke, the engine fired—but it didn’t sound healthy. A short drive around the block confirmed the obvious: the cosmetics were hiding a multitude of small (and not-so-small) issues. Independent checks had missed the cumulative problems that made her unreliable in her current state.

Local specialists were initially enthusiastic—they loved the idea of servicing and reviving such a beautiful classic for the summer. But enthusiasm quickly turned to hesitation. Few had meaningful experience working on W113s. Like a rare gem guarded by a cautious owner, there seemed to be no obvious place to take her. So she sat in storage, waiting for a plan.

In the end, the only way forward was to strip her down and diagnose properly. Layer by layer, we dismantled her—and the deeper we went, the worse it became. Decades of “keep her on the road” fixes had masked serious structural decay. When we reached bare metal, media blasting revealed the truth: beneath the striking Signal Red paint was an originally metallic silver car, riddled with rust and rot. Almost every panel needed replacement once the cavities and corrosion fell away.

That was the end of the dream as a quick project. But it taught me exactly why Pagoda prices span such extremes. The low end hides cars that look presentable but require tens (or hundreds) of thousands in hidden restoration work to become truly dependable and valuable. The high end reflects fully documented, professional restorations with confidence that what you see is what you get—no surprises once the layers are peeled back.

After 55+ years since the last W113 left the factory, there’s rarely any shortcut to certainty without that level of scrutiny.

That’s the gap we bridge. We can manage the entire process —sourcing, inspecting, restoring to the highest standards, and delivering a Pagoda ready for the next 500,000 miles.

Before
After
  • Data Card (Birth Certificate)

By utilizing the original data card if available or purchasing the original record from Mercedes, we can ascertain the factory-supplied method in which the car was initially sold. Subsequently, we can restore it to factory specifications if desired.

  • Fabrication

After stripping the car back and media blasting, we can replace any panels and fabricate to ensure the chassis is in great condition for rebuilding.

  • Engine Rebuild

Engine disassembled, rebuilt, and restored to eliminate signs of wear. Key components replated, ensuring optimal timing before reinstalling into the vehicle.

  • Injection Pump Rebuild

A vital and valuable element of the car's operation. The injection pump must be clean and operational to guarantee the injectors function systematically. Complete breakdown and cleaning is a precise task.
